Men's Soccer Pulls Off 2-1 Win in Double Overtime

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Ben Lyon scored his second game-winning goal in as many games to lift the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's soccer team to a riveting 2-1 double overtime win over Fontbonne Wednesday.

The freshman Lyon (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) drilled the game-winner in the 104th minute of play, aided by an assist from classmate Brad Rostron (Westlake, Texas/Southlake Carroll). The goal ended the sudden-death final frame to lift the Engineers to their second straight victory.

Rose-Hulman sophomore Mike Smyser (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) opened the scoring early for the Engineers (3-1-2, 0-0 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference), as he connected on his first goal of the season in the 6th minute to give RHIT a 1-0 lead. Senior teammate William Senat (Edmond, Okla./North) was credited with the assist.

Fontbonne (3-3-1) responded in the 25th minute behind a goal by Zach Schuchardt and assisted by Justin Williams to knot the score at 1-1 entering the half. Both defenses held in the second half to force overtime, until Lyon's score gave Rose-Hulman the victory with just five minutes remaining.

Rose-Hulman junior keeper Drew Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) picked up his second straight win in goal for the Engineers, who were outshot by a slim 12-11 margin.

Fontbonne also held a slight advantage on corner kicks, 5-3.

The Engineers return to action when they travel to Centre College Sunday for a 4 p.m. matchup. Rose-Hulman's next home game is set for a 7:30 p.m. tilt with Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
