Men's Soccer Battles Transylvania to 1-1 Draw

LEXINGTON, KY. – Behind freshman Ben Lyon's goal in the 61st minute, the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology men's soccer team kept itself in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference title hunt with a 1-1 draw in double overtime with Transylvania Saturday.

The Engineers (7-4-3, 4-0-1 HCAC) stand two points back from current league leader Hanover (5-0 HCAC), which picked up a 2-0 victory over Bluffton Saturday.

Lyon (Westfield, Ind./Westfield) gave the Engineers new life with his unassisted score in the second half, good for his fourth goal of the season.  Senior Mike Schiff (Martinsville/Mooresville) was credited with the assist.

Transylvania (9-3-2, 3-2), who shared the 2012 HCAC regular-season title with RHIT, scored just before halftime with a Matt Melzer goal in the 40th minute, assisted by teammate Kyle Smith.

The two teams also tied in last year's only meeting, 2-2.

Junior goalkeeper Drew Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/Bishop Fenwick) stopped six shots in 110 minutes to keep the Engineers within striking distance, despite being outshot for the match, 13-4.

Transylvania also finished the match with a 9-5 advantage on corner kicks.

Rose-Hulman returns to the field Wednesday for a 7 p.m. home matchup with visiting Franklin College.
