TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Men's Soccer Invitational is underway after nearly a two-hour weather delay.
Rose-Hulman is scheduled to face off with Alma College around 9:45 p.m. tonight in the season opener at the Intramural Field.
The event includes two matches on Friday and two on Saturday involving four midwestern NCAA Division III soccer programs. Rose-Hulman will host Alma at 8 p.m. on Friday, then welcome Kalamazoo to campus at 4 p.m. on Saturday in its two matches.
Rose-Hulman enters the season ranked No. 22 nationally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and is the preseason favorite in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference coaches poll. The Fightin' Engineers reached the NCAA Division III Sweet Sixteen last season, highlighted by a 1-0 upset win over undefeated and No. 1 ranked Ohio Wesleyan University in the NCAA Division III Tournament.
This year's squad features the return of a defensive unit that helped Rose-Hulman record 13 shutouts last season. Rose-Hulman recorded four consecutive shutouts in the HCAC and NCAA Division III Tournaments prior to falling in the Sweet Sixteen.
Rose-Hulman finished 12-6-5 overall last season and faces two teams from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Alma finished 9-8-1 last season, while Kalamazoo had an overall mark of 8-10-1.
After this weekend's Invitational, Rose-Hulman returns to the pitch on Wednesday with a trip to Greenville College.
