NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology sophomore Ben Lyon scored both goals and senior goalkeeper Drew Miller recorded his 31st career shutout as the Fightin' Engineers topped Manchester University 2-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's soccer action on Saturday.
Lyon scored twice in a four-minute span of the first half as Rose-Hulman jumped out to an early lead to secure its ninth victory of the season. Lyon scored in the 11th minute on an assist from freshman Austin Webb, then tallied his seventh goal of the season in the 15th minute on an assist from junior Dieter Schultz.
Rose-Hulman controlled much of the contest, outshooting Manchester 17-7. The Fightin' Engineers also had a slight 4-3 edge on corner kicks. Miller recorded one save in the victory.
Offensively, Schultz fired four shots and Webb had a pair of shots for Rose-Hulman. Jared Hallal led the Manchester defense with four saves, and two players had two shots each.
Rose-Hulman moved to 9-3-3 on the season and 4-0-1 in HCAC play, while Manchester dropped to 5-9 overall and 1-4 in league games. The Fightin' Engineers return home to face Earlham College on Wednesday night. Rose-Hulman enters the matchup with a one-game lead over Transylvania and Franklin in the conference standings.
