ANDERSON, IND. -- Two Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's soccer players scored their first career goals to propel a 3-0 victory at Anderson University on Tuesday night.
With the win, Rose-Hulman improved to 2-0 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference and 6-2-4 overall on the season. The Fightin' Engineers have lost just once in the months of September and October.
Sophomore Cassidy Cain (Noblesville) scored the first goal of her career in the 14th minute to give the Engineers a lead they would not relinquish. Cain scored off after a corner kick by sophomore Hayley Gilliam (Zionsville) was cleared onto her foot by the Anderson defense.
The lead reached 2-0 late in the first half. Junior Haley O'Neil (Batavia, Ill.) started the scoring play with a successful pass to senior Nicky Wheeler (Avon). The forward blasted a shot that was saved onto the foot of freshman Miranda Chastain (Clayton/Cascade) (pictured) who booted home her first college goal.
Rose-Hulman added another score 10 minutes into the second half. Sophomore Helena Bomber (Bargersville/Center Grove) started the play with a pass to Chastain, who found Gilliam for her fourth goal of the season.
Sophomore Lucinda Combs (Danville, Ky./Boyle County) recorded her sixth shutout in seven matches and her eighth of the season to lead the defensive effort.
