TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology has been picked to finish fourth in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball standings this season, in a preseason poll of league coaches released today.
Rose-Hulman received a total of 68 poll points for the fourth position after finishing with a record of 18-24 overall and 16-11 in league play last season. The Fightin' Engineers return five starters and two members of their starting rotation from the 2017 squad.
Top returning hitters include juniors David Burnside (.384, 13 2B, 7 HR), Brian Thomas (.298, 10 2B, 5 HR), Conner Shipley (.346, 5 2B) and Davis Robeson (.268, 4 2B), along with senior Marcus Wechselberger (.293, 6 2B). On the mound, the Rose-Hulman pitching staff is led by senior Ian Grant (3-5, 4.07 ERA), sophomore Clayton Mayfield (3-3, 3.13 ERA, 4 saves) and sophomore Luke Buehler (2-2, 4.22 ERA).
The team also features one of the top incoming freshman classes in recent memory, with at least four position players and multiple pitchers expected to contribute immediately.
Rose-Hulman opens the 2018 schedule with its annual Florida spring trip starting Feb. 26. The home opening weekend tournament featuring Chicago and Wisconsin-Platteville is set for March 17-18.
