Baseball Team Earns No. 3 HCAC Tournament Seed with Senior Day Sweep

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology clinched the No. 3 seed in the 2018 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball tournament with a doubleheader sweep over Anderson University on Senior Day Saturday at Art Nehf Field.

In the opener, Rose-Hulman scored three times in the fifth inning and added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to earn a 7-6 victory.

Rose-Hulman recorded 11 hits in the contest, led by three players with two hits each.  Luke Kluemper provided the game winning RBI with a double among his two hits and two RBIs.  Ryan Stachowski added two singles, two runs scored and two RBIs, and Conner Helbling provided two singles, two runs and one RBI.

Rose-Hulman and Anderson battled through a tightly contested matchup with the score tied at 5-5 after five innings and 6-6 entering the bottom of the eighth.  Stone Brogan ended a bases loaded threat in the eighth with a key out to pick up the victory for Rose-Hulman, and Ben Yoss recorded the final three outs for his second save.

The Fightin' Engineer defense also played a key role in the game one victory.  Sean Casey threw out a potential run at the plate with a strong throw from left field, and Davis Robeson made a fully extended diving catch in right field to thwart a potential Anderson rally.

In the nightcap, the two teams battled to a 1-1 score after seven innings before the bats became awake.  Rose-Hulman scored six runs in the eighth, then Anderson answered with three in the ninth before the Fightin' Engineers secured a 7-4 win.

Sean Casey led the offense with a 3-3 performance, including a triple, two runs scored and one RBI.  Luke Calabrese added two doubles, one run and one RBI.

Conner Shipley contributed a multiple-hit performance with two singles and one RBI.  Stachowski added a single, one run and one RBI to the performance.

Luke Buehler started the game with five shutout innings and five strikeouts for Rose-Hulman.  Dan Connolly allowed one run in two innings, but survived a bases loaded jam with back-to-back strikeouts to keep the score tied at 1-1.  Dylan Diorio pitched 1.2 innings for the win, and Drew Borman recorded the final out for his first save.

Rose-Hulman improved to 17-21 overall and 10-7 in league play, while Anderson dropped to 22-18 and 11-7 in conference games.  The Fightin' Engineers travel to Wabash for a non-conference matchup on Sunday starting at noon.  Rose-Hulman and Anderson will meet in round one of the HCAC Tournament on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at Franklin College.
