FRANKLIN, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology will face top-seeded Franklin College in round two of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament on Friday at 12:30 p.m.
The winner of the Rose-Hulman/Franklin matchup will earn a trip to the HCAC Tournament Championship Round that begins Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The loser will open Saturday action at 9:30 a.m. and need one more victory to advance to the Championship Round. The winner of the HCAC Tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Rose-Hulman has won seven straight games to improve to 20-21 on the season. Franklin enters with the nation's leading winning percentage at 36-3 overall.
Rose-Hulman won its seventh consecutive game and advanced to the winner's bracket in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball tournament with a come-from-behind 7-4 victory against Anderson University on Thursday at Franklin College.
Rose-Hulman returns to action on Friday at 12:30 p.m., facing the top-seeded Franklin College in a winner's bracket game. The Fightin' Engineers will wait until Saturday to return to the diamond after the Franklin game, regardless of the result.
Rose-Hulman trailed 3-0 entering the eighth inning, before scoring three runs to tie the score. The Fightin' Engineers took a 4-3 lead in the ninth inning and were within one strike of the win, before a double by Anderson tied the score at 4-4 and forced extra innings. Rose-Hulman responded with three runs of its own in the 10th inning to take the 7-4 victory.
Davis Robeson had the two key hits of the day with three RBIs to lead the Rose-Hulman offense. Robeson put Rose-Hulman ahead 4-3 with a single in the ninth inning, then provided two key insurance runs in the 10th with another RBI single.
Rose-Hulman rallied from a 3-0 deficit with three runs in the eighth inning. Robeson drove home the first run with an RBI ground out, before Conner Helbling brought the deficit to 3-2 with an RBI single. Luke Calabrese provided the game-tying hit with an RBI single to center field to force the tie.
Anderson was within strike of falling in regulation, but Nick Jones doubled home Corbin Maddox to tie the score at 4-4 and force extra innings.
Offensively, Conner Shipley joined Calabrese with three hits each. Robeson and Casey had two hits each, and Kluemper scored twice for the Fightin' Engineers.
Luke Buehler had a strong start for the pitching staff, allowing two earned runs and six hits in seven innings of work with five strikeouts. Stone Brogan kept the score tied with one inning of relief. Chuck Alexa picked up the win with a scoreless ninth, and Dan Connolly pitched the 10th for his second save.
Joseph Moran and Nick Butcher had two hits each for Anderson. John Becker struck out five in 7.2 innings of work with five strikeouts for the Ravens.
Rose-Hulman improved to 20-21. The double elimination tournament continues through the weekend at Franklin.
