TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology baseball team has been picked to finish third in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference this season, in a preseason poll of league coaches released on Wednesday.

Rose-Hulman returns eight of its nine starters, the top three starting pitchers and several relief pitchers from the 2018 squad that finished 20-23 and qualified for the HCAC Tournament.  The Fightin' Engineers placed third in the HCAC regular season standings and in the league tournament last year.

Key returnees include first-team all-HCAC and ABCA all-region pitcher Luke Buehler (4-4, 1.53 ERA, 62 strikeouts) and second-team all-HCAC outfielder David Burnside (.303, 9 2B, 21 RBIs).  Conner Helbling also earned honorable mention all-HCAC honors after hitting .318 with six doubles and one home run.

Offensively, returning starters also include Conner Shipley (.337, 5 2B); Luke Calabrese (.336, 7 2B, 1 HR); Sean Casey (.323, 5 2B, 2 HR); Logan Cody (.314, 4 2B, 1 3B); Davis Robeson (.305, 9 2B, 4 3B); and Ryan Stachowski (.288, 10 2B, 2 HR).

Clayton Mayfield, who pitched for the Terre Haute Rex this summer, returns to the mound after finishing 4-3 with a 3.71 ERA and 51 strikeouts.  Trever Bruno (2-4, 3.83 ERA); Dan Connolly (0-1, 4.24 ERA); Trevor Dallio (1-4, 5.87); Stone Brogan (1-1, 4.50); and Ben Yoss (1-1, 7.63) also pitched more than 15 innings for the Fightin' Engineers last season.

Rose-Hulman opens the 2019 campaign with its annual Spring Trip to Florida beginning Monday Feb. 25.  The home opener takes place March 9, when Rose-Hulman hosts Illinois Tech at 11 a.m. and MacMurray at 5 p.m.
