TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- A career day propelled Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology junior defensive back Mitchell Kelley to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Football Defensive Player of the Week honors, in results released Monday by the league office.
Kelley snagged his first career interception with 2:27 left in the fourth quarter and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown, helping Rose-Hulman knock off Bluffton University 23-14 in the annual Homecoming Game on Saturday. In addition, Kelley recorded a career-high six tackles as a member of the Fightin' Engineer secondary.
Kelley added one pass breakup in a performance that resulted in the Rose-Hulman defense holding Bluffton to just 14 points and 296 yards of total offense. He also helped the defense hold Bluffton to 10-23 passing with five interceptions in the victory.
Kelley has recorded 22 total tackles and four pass breakups this season to go along with his one interception.
Rose-Hulman improved to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in HCAC play with Saturday's win. The Fightin' Engineers have a bye this weekend before hosting Anderson University on Oct. 20.
