Mitchell Kelley, Garrett Wight Earn Google Cloud Academic All-District Honors

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology junior defensive back Mitchell Kelley and junior running back Garrett Wight were named to the first-team Google Cloud/CoSIDA Academic All-District Team, in results released Thursday.

Kelley and Wight will advance to the NCAA Division III Academic All-America ballot, with the national team scheduled for release on Wednesday December 12.  Both the District and National teams are determined by a vote of NCAA Division III sports information personnel from across the nation and combines both academic and athletic accomplishments.

Kelley recorded 49 tackles, 2 interceptions and 4 pass breakups in his first year as a consistent member of the secondary playing rotation.  He was named HCAC Defensive Player of the Week after a game clinching 45-yard interception return for a touchdown in the team's 23-14 win over Bluffton.  Kelley had a career-high eight tackles in an October win over Anderson.  

In the classroom, Kelley carries a 3.87 grade point average as a mechanical engineering major.  He has been a Dean's List honoree in every academic quarter.

Wight was named second-team all-HCAC after leading Rose-Hulman with 738 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.  He earned second-team Google Cloud Academic All-American honors in 2017 after earning the HCAC rushing championship with 1,036 yards.

Wight has rushed for 1,788 yards and 19 touchdowns in his career, while also recording 56 receptions for 623 yards and seven touchdowns as a receiver.  In the classroom, Wight has a 3.94 grade point average as a mechanical engineering major and is a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.

Rose-Hulman finished 5-5 this season and 5-3 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.  The Fightin' Engineers open the 2019 season at home against currently No. 1 ranked Mount Union on Sept. 7.
