TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Hanover College forward Josh Hughes scored once in the second half and once in the second overtime to lead the visiting Panthers to a 2-1 men's soccer victory over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Thursday afternoon at the Engineer Intramural Field.
Both teams entered the game with undefeated HCAC records and the quality of the game did not disappoint. Rose-Hulman took a 1-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the first half on a score by Ethan Butler. His goal came off a crossing pass from Eric Kirby.
Hanover knotted the score at 1-1 on a goal by Hughes in the 51st minute. After both teams battled for 50 scoreless minutes, Hughes scored on an attack early in the final overtime frame on a pass form Tanner Korfhagen.
Hanover outshot Rose-Hulman 12-7 for the match, with the totals standing 8-7 after regulation time. Pascal Schlee made four saves in goal to highlight the Fightin' Engineer defensive effort. Sam Alvares led the Rose-Hulman offense with two shots.
Hanover improved to 7-5 and 4-0 in HCAC play, while Rose-Hulman dropped to 6-5-1 and 3-1 in league matches. The Fightin' Engineers host Earlham College in Senior Day on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the Intramural Field.
