Men's Tennis Picked as Favorites to Win 2019 HCAC Championship

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology has been picked as the favorite to win its fifth consecutive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's tennis championship this spring, in a preseason poll of league coaches released on Friday.

Rose-Hulman has won four straight regular season HCAC championships, four straight HCAC Tournament titles, and qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament for four consecutive years heading into the 2019 season.  The Fightin' Engineers have won 39 consecutive matches against HCAC competition and has not lost to a league opponent since May 2014.  Conference action for the Fightin' Engineers begins March 30.

The Fightin' Engineers will face one of NCAA Division III's most challenging tennis schedules this spring.  Rose-Hulman will compete in two matches against NCAA Division I opposition; three matches against NCAA D-II foes; and three matches with preseason top 40 ranked D-III opponents.

Ian Landwehr was named HCAC Player of the Year and ended the 2018 season ranked No. 40 nationally in the ITA singles rankings, after finishing 22-3 and a perfect 19-0 against D-III competition in 2018. Andre Adam and Austin Perry added 17 singles wins each last spring.

The roster includes a total of 12 players, including five freshmen that will look to help Rose-Hulman replace its two graduating seniors from the 2018 campaign.

Rose-Hulman opens the 2019 men's tennis season with two matches at the Wabash Valley Tennis Center this weekend.  The Fightin' Engineers host No. 18 ranked Case Western Reserve on Saturday at 4 p.m., then face No. 9 ranked Washington (Mo.) on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
