TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology opened the men's cross country season by showcasing its depth at the Indiana State University Open Race on Saturday morning.
The top seven runners for Rose-Hulman completed the five-kilometer event within a 26.7 second margin of each other. Senior Andrew Thompson (Mundelein, Ill./Vernon Hills) led the individual performance with a time of 16:47.4 and a second-place finish in the Open Race. Junior Derek Heeger (Avon) came home second among Engineers with a time of 16:56.5 and a third-place finish.
The top five Rose-Hulman runners came home in the second through sixth overall positions. Rounding out the top five Rose-Hulman runners were sophomore Sam Sobczak (Westfield) in a time of 16:57.3; freshman Brendon Mattiuz (Fishers) in 17:01.8; and junior Ryan Meyer (Greenwood/Center Grove) with a mark of 17:08.
"Today's meet was good movement in the right direction. We showed great depth, and I'm really encouraged by today's meet," said first-year head coach Geoff Wayton.
Rose-Hulman returns to action at the Indiana Intercollegiate Meet on Friday afternoon.
