Rose-Hulman Softball Sweeps Anderson in 2018 Home Finale

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology picked up a couple of wins in the team's 2018 home finale on Thursday night against Anderson University.  

Game 1 - Rose-Hulman 9, Anderson 3

Rose-Hulman topped Anderson by a final score of 9-3 in Game One of the night after the Fightin' Engineers combined for 14 hits.  

Senior Gabbi Markison got Rose-Hulman on the scoreboard first with a three-run triple to corner in right in the bottom of the 2nd inning.  Markison went 2-4.  

Anderson quickly answered Rose-Hulman's first rally with a run in the top of 3rd following an RBI single from Samantha Ausmus.  Pitcher Michelle Korf escaped a bases loaded jam in the inning and also managed to scatter 13 Raven hits en route to her fourth win of the season.  Korf's pitching efforts were also aided by some stellar Rose-Hulman defense.  Sophomore Cassidy Yeomans made a long running grab in deep right center that prevented a couple of runs from scoring.  The RHIT middle infield of Jessica Will and Mandi Routon teamed up for a slick out as well.  Will made a diving effort at second on a hard hit ball up the middle and then threw on to the shortstop Routon who was covering second base.  Routon made a barehanded s on Will's throw to complete the out.

Rose-Hulman added to their lead in the bottom of the 3rd.  Michelle Korf started the rally with a bloop single down the line in the right that scored Jenny Miller.  Korf later scored in the inning after an error in the field by the Ravens.  Jessica Thuer continued the RHIT rally with a two-run single to right.  Rose would jump out to a 9-1 lead following a wild pitch and another error that allowed two more Engineers to score.

Every single Rose-Hulman batter recorded at least one hit in the win.  Gabbi Markison went 2-4 with three RBI.  Jenny Miller went 2-4 with two doubles and two runs.  Mandi Routon finished 2-3 at the plate with a walk and a run scored.  Michelle Korf went 2-4 with a run and a RBI.  Cassidy Yeomans finished 2-3 with two runs.

Game 2 - Rose-Hulman 4, Anderson 3

The Fightin' Engineers completed the sweep of the Ravens after taking Game Two by a final score of 4-3.

Rose jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the 1st.  Senior Jessica Will capped her RHIT career at home with a solo home run to left.  Following a walk to Jenny MillerMandi Routon delivered a two out RBI triple.  

Anderson got on the scoreboard following a sacrifice fly to right center off the bat of Samantha Ausmus in the top of the 3rd.

Jessica Thuer and Bryly Shipman delivered a pair of clutch hits in the bottom of the 6th inning.  Thuer hit a single to center that plated Routon to give Rose a 3-1 lead.  Shipman then followed with a double down the line in left that scored another Engineer to move the score to 4-1.  

Rose would need both of those insurance runs as Anderson made things interesting late.  In the top of the 7th Lexi Gray hit a two-run homer to left that drew the Ravens within a run at 4-3.  Senior pitcher Jenny Miller settled down and got the next three outs as she earned her second win of the season.

Rose improved to 9-21 on the year and also picked up its first two Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference wins of the season.  Anderson fell to 10-22, 3-9 HCAC.  RHIT will conclude the 2018 season on Saturday April 28 with a doubleheader at Bluffton.
