TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology closed within six points early in the fourth quarter, but Defiance College withstood the rally to pick up a 53-43 women's basketball win at Hulbert Arena on Saturday.
Defiance held a 39-32 lead after the third quarter and increased the lead to 11 points, before a layup by Rose Burnham and a three-pointer by Hannah Woody brought Rose-Hulman within 49-43 at the 5:11 mark. The Yellow Jackets defense held the Engineers scoreless in the final five minutes to secure the victory.
Woody led the Rose-Hulman offense with 12 points and three assists. Desirae Webster pitched in eight points, five rebounds and a team-high four steals.
Other key contributors for Rose-Hulman included Kahlan Jester with five points, four rebounds and three assists; Nosa Igiehon with four points and a game-high 11 rebounds; and Burnham, Avery Lewman and Nola Wilson with four points each. Jordan Barlow and Burnham led the team with three blocked shots each.
Lexie Sparks came off the bench to lead all scorers with 16 points on 7-9 from the field for Defiance. Kalyn Pickens added 12 points and four rebounds. Josi Wolf and Nysha Speed added nine and eight points each for the Yellow Jackets.
Defiance improved to 2-0 in HCAC play and 2-4 overall with the win, while Rose-Hulman stands at 1-5 and 0-1 in league play. The Fightin' Engineers travel to Bluffton University in another conference matchup on Saturday.
