TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology opened the 2018 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women's tennis tournament with a convincing 5-0 shutout win over Anderson University on Friday night at West Indy Racquet Club.
Rose-Hulman won all three doubles matches by wide margins to open the match. Anna Thompson and Naomi Bhagat picked up an 8-2 win at No. 1; Fanny-Jane Banda and Kyla Jarvis added an 8-3 win at No. 2; and Linde Schaffer joined Krista Manche for an 8-2 win at No. 3.
In singles play, Rose-Hulman rolled past Anderson at the No. 1 and No. 3 singles positions. Bhagat won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Banda picked up a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles in a match that was played to decision.
Rose-Hulman improved to 5-7 on the season, while Anderson completed the campaign at 7-5. The Fightin' Engineers face top-seeded Hanover College on Saturday at 1 pm in the HCAC Tournament Semifinal match. The winning team in this weekend's six-team event will qualify for the NCAA Division III Tournament in May.
