NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind.-- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology was able to pick up two key wins on the road this weekend. The team was able to defeat HCAC competitor Manchester University in the conference opener 3-0, and Eureka with a final of 3-2.
In the first match of the weekend double header the Engineers faced off against the Manchester Spartans. Rose-Hulman was able to pick up the win in three straight sets 25-23, 25-15, and 25-20. Katie Orbeta and Madison Wendelin both led the team with 11 kills in the match. Elizabeth Canon was also able to make an impact offensively with eight kills.
Eryn Castaneda led the team with 16 assists followed by Orbeta who recorded 15 assists with four service aces. On the defensive side, Katryna Dahlberg was able to lead the team with 17 digs. Riley Woodruff was also able to make an impact defensively with four total blocks.
The second match of the day put the Engineers up against the Red Devils of Eureka College. The Engineers were able to defeat Eureka in a hard fought match after five sets 25-10, 24-26, 15-25, 25-18, 15-10. Canon was able to lead the team with 20 kills. Orbeta was also able to reach double digits with 11 kills as part of a triple-double that featured 32 assists, 13 digs and five service aces.
Dahlberg set a new Rose-Hulman school record with 54 digs in the win over Eureka, with Orbeta (13) and Emma Royer (10) also reaching double figures. Orbeta had team-leading numbers with her 32 assists and five service aces. Castaneda was also able to make an impact with 19 assists on the night. Maria Bruner led the team with six blocks.
Rose-Hulman stands at 9-12 overall this season and 1-0 in HCAC play. The team will host Franklin College this coming Wednesday, 10/9 at 7:00 PM.
