TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology rallied from a two-sets-to-one deficit to earn a dramatic five-set win over Defiance College in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Opening Round Match on Wednesday at Hulbert Arena.
Rose-Hulman won the first set 25-20, before Defiance took the lead with 25-21 and 25-15 set victories. The Fightin' Engineers won the fourth set 25-15, then picked up a 15-12 victory in the deciding set.
Eryn Castaneda added 21 assists and also had 10 digs. Katryna Dahlberg led the back row defensive effort with 35 digs, and was also joined in double figures by Gabrielle Gilbertson with 10 digs. Gilbertson and Orbeta had a team-high two service aces, and Riley Woodruff pitched in with nine kills and six total blocks.
Delaney Monnin led Defiance with 18 kills and Brianna Wheeler had 35 assists with 18 digs. Morgan Porter added 18 digs for the Yellow Jackets.
Rose-Hulman advances to the HCAC Tournament Semifinal Match at top-seeded Transylvania University on Saturday at 2 pm. The Fightin' Engineers improved to 15-15 overall, while Defiance caps the season at 17-12.
